Nights are getting warmer, and rides are getting longer. We all know the feeling of a late-night, warm summer ride… and it’s awesome. But it’s dark, and we’re on the road… which means our overall visibility is impacted.

We’ve been pouring over NHTSA statistics recently for Motorcycle Safety Awareness month this past May—and we’d like to take a little opportunity to discuss one of those statistics once more.
This 2021 NHTSA study found that 43% of motorcycle crashes occur at night. Overall, 97% of accidents occurred during clear conditions.
Now we can assume that those statistics are highly influenced by normal riding factors—obviously, more people ride when it’s sunny out. And the majority of riding is done during the day.
So those figures are representative of our community’s general riding preferences: bright days, clear skies, and daytime visibility.
But with that being said: almost half of accidents occur at nighttime. So what can you do to help mitigate your risk of getting smacked? We’re talking about accidents that are on drivers around you, specifically.
Improve your visibility.
High Visibility Gear
High-vis gear is an excellent addition to any rider’s repertoire, particularly when riding at night. With helmets, vests, and high-vis tape, you can absolutely improve your visibility on the road.
There’s one thing that high visibility gear doesn’t improve though, and that’s indicating a reduction in speed to drivers behind you. And that’s where Brake Free comes in.
Drivers Behind You Know When You’re Slowing Down
That’s our entire goal—to let drivers know you’re reducing your speed. No matter how you’re doing it. Our patented algorithm works with accelerometers and gyrometers to detect any kind of braking: rolling off the throttle, downshifting, emergency braking, and regular braking.
With motorcycle taillights so low and often out of the line of sight for drivers, it’s imperative to have an additional brake light at eye-level to let drivers know you’re slowing down. Plus, 100 ultra-bright LEDs make sure you’re seen on the road.
