Brake Free: An Affordable Way to Boost Visibility

Brake Free: An Affordable Way to Boost Visibility

Getting involved in powersports can be a lot of things—challenging, liberating, and obscenely fun—but it can also get expensive. We can easily spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on safety gear and tech to keep ourselves riding as the years go on.

We’re here to challenge that mentality with a smart helmet brake light to help you stay seen on the road.

An Affordable Motorcycle Visibility Upgrade

Motorcycle visibility on a budget seems counterintuitive, especially when you consider that lots of upgrades require additional costs in installation, maintenance, upkeep, and so on. With Brake Free, all you need is your unit and your mount (or multiple mounts if you have multiple helmets) and you’re good to go. No apps, no wires, no splicing anything into your bike (or EUC, or e-bike, and so forth).

Is a Helmet Brake Light Worth It?

Absolutely. We point over and over again to a single NHTSA study which showed that a center-high mounted stop light reduced rear-impact crashes by 35 percent—which is massive.

At Brake Free, we can’t change the way you ride. It’s up to you to ride responsibly and within your limits.

And as a rider, we can’t change the way other people drive—which is a huge safety concern when we aren’t surrounded by thousands of pounds of steel. Here we’re trying to focus on what we can change, though. Our visibility and other drivers’ ability to see us, and in particular, recognize when we’re coming to a stop.

Brake Free’s patented algorithm uses an accelerometer and gyrometer to detect braking of any kind: regular, downshifting, and emergency braking. That way, even if you aren’t actuating a brake lever to reduce your speed, folks behind you will know that you’re coming to a stop.

What About Visibility Gear That Works Best at Night?

Brake Free has 100 ultra-bright LEDs that work phenomenally in both day and night. And with three operating modes—active, pulsing, and stealth—you can control the brightness of your unit to increase your visibility at any time.

How Brake Free Improves Visibility Day and Night

We have a longer write-up on our operating modes, but here's how they work:

Active Mode: All four LED panels run at 20% power—essentially acting as running lights. When any kind of braking is detected, all light panels activate to full brightness, and then automatically revert to 20% when it senses that you're no longer decreasing speed.

Pulsing Mode: The side LED panels pulse for additional visibility while you're riding. They pulse at 20% brightness continuously, and when the unit detects a decrease in speed, all four panels light up to full brightness. Once again, when the unit no longer detects a decrease in speed, it returns to its pulsing pattern.

Note: Pulsing mode will only function if your battery is more than 25% charged.

Stealth Mode: Only the center LED panels run with 20% brightness during normal activation. When braking, all four LED panels light up to full braking, and when the unit no longer detects a decrease in speed, it returns to its normal pattern.
