It was time for a new lid so I decided to try adding a Brake Free to my new RF1400. I ordered this special mount from CycleGear and followed the instructions in the YouTube video to place the mount on the helmet between the DOT and SHOEI stickers. While it definitely works, and seems to hold the unit to my helmet ok, there is a pretty large gap between my RF1400 and the Brake Free unit on all sides. It makes me think that they could have made this mount about 1-2mm thinner, then the Brake Free would sit almost flush with the Shoei. I worry that this gap is going to cause my Brake Free to pop off while I’m riding due to wind forces or bumps in the road. I don’t really like the way the Brake Free mounts. It doesn’t really feel very secure and it takes very little upward pressure to pop the unit off. I would be very upset to take off my helmet after a ride and find the Brake Free gone. I haven’t read reports of them coming loose so hopefully it’s just a worry that won’t come true. I would have given 5 stars if the custom RF1400 mount sat more flush to the shell and if the retention action was more sturdy and took more force to release. For $8 I was expecting a clean look.
